HP's New Data Deduplication Solution

HP has long been at the cutting edge when it comes to storage. In November 2011, HP announced an enterprise-class appliance designed specifically for data deduplication. The solution is expected to have a storage capacity of as much as 768 TB – all on a single chassis. Along with their new NAS solution that can hold 32 TB in just 3U, HP is once again demonstrating how much they have to offer the enterprise.
The B6200 StoreOnce Backup System
The new data deduplication solution is designed to back up or restore your organization’s data as quickly as 28TB an hour. That’s about seven times as fast as today’s HP deduplication solution.
Part of the technology for the B6200 comes from Autonomy, a company that HP acquired in 2011. The Autonomy’s IDOL (Intelligent Data Operating Layer) solution collects data that’s been indexed from a number of nodes throughout the enterprise, and then it stores it for fast retrieval as well as processing.
A single node B6200 starts at a raw 48 TB, while the four-node, fully expanded version does a raw 768 TB. Its data deduplication ratio runs around 20 to 1, although that number can vary greatly in real-world implementations.
In addition to the Autonomy IDOL software, this new HP appliance relies on the Peer Motion solution from HP. This software lets you move both applications as well as data between multiple HP storage devices and systems, as well as subsidiary systems from 3Par and from LeftHand.
The X5000 G2
The other offering, the X5000 G2 Network Storage System, represents HP’s first NAS that’s powered by Windows. This allows for a lower price point than the NAS arrays that HP has offered previously.
The X5000’s architecture is based on the same blade server configuration that you’ll find on HP’s E5000 Exchange Messaging System. It uses NFS as well as CIFS file protocols, as well.
A single X5000 unit can support as many as 10,000 users, and it can utilize 2.5 or inch drives.
